A bizarre race over the weekend saw Red Bull Racing’s Max Verstappen converting pole position into his third 2019 season win with tons of action taking place in the final few laps of the F1 Brazilian Grand Prix.
Verstappen’s strong showing on the weekend proved that he was the deserving winner of the race, but the spotlight was not on him as both Ferraris clash and retire, also Mercedes’ Lewis Hamilton’s love tap on Alex Albon from Red Bull caused both drivers to miss out on the podium, allowing Toro Rosso’s Pierre Gasly to finish in second place.
A dramatic double retirement for Ferrari on the last 5 laps of the race, caused by Sebastian Vettel tagging his own team mate Charles Leclerc saw a late Safety Car brought out into the track. With two laps remaining as the race restarted, Hamilton who was in third place knocked onto Albon, demoting him from second to 14th at the end of the race. Gasly was able to hold off Hamilton to the line, successfully claiming second place as well as his first podium in F1.
Hamilton was then handed a five-second penalty, which became a cause for celebration for McLaren’s Carlos Sainz as he started the race at P20 and ending it with his first top-three finish.
